Money, Money, Money, Money: Ethical and Clinical Considerations

Sunday, May 6, 2012

9:30 a.m. Continental Breakfast, Sign In and Registration
10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Presentation
Sheppard Pratt Conference Center
6501 N. Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21285

Program Description:
Money is a fundamental part of the clinical encounter, about which little is usually said. While there are legal restrictions about publicly discussing fees, these restrictions support a discomfort most of us feel, which, unfortunately mirrors a discomfort most of our patients feel. This is a prescription for counter-transference blind-spots. There are both clinical and ethical issues involved in the setting and collecting of fees, and therapists need to find useful ways to think and talk about this set of issues. In this workshop, we will consider the place of money in the clinical situation, addressing challenges, and questioning assumptions we all tend to make.

About the speaker:
David Cooper, Ph.D. is a graduate of the Washington Psychoanalytic Institute, where he is a Teaching Analyst and Chair of the Curriculum Committee. Dr. Cooper was the Director of Group Psychotherapy Training at Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital (1984-1991) and Director of Group Psychotherapy and of the Lodge Day Program for the treatment of severe personality disorders at Chestnut Lodge Hospital (1991-2001). Since 2001 he has been in the full time private practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. He is currently the President-Elect of the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis.

Objectives:
At the end of this program, participants will be able to:
1) Identify at least 2 common sources of transference with regard to the psychotherapy fee;
2) Identify at least 2 common sources of countertransference with regard to the psychotherapy fee;
3) Articulate the ethical implications of establishing and re-negotiating the psychotherapy fee as evidenced in clinical case material

References:
For those who are interested, Dr. Cooper recommends the following reading on the topic:
Berger, B. & Newman, S. (2012). Money talks. New York: Routledge.
Dewald, P. A., & Clark, R. W. (Eds.). (2001). Ethics case book of the American Psychoanalytic
Association. New York: American Psychoanalytic Association.

Who Should Attend?
Mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, pastoral counselors) and persons with an interest in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thinking and application.

CE Credits:
CE credits are granted to participants with documented attendance and completed evaluation forms. Attendance is monitored. Credit will not be granted to registrants who arrive late, or depart early. Credit will be granted to participants who submit a completed evaluation form at the end of the session. It is the responsibility of participants to comply with these requirements.
Upon completion of this program, participants will be given 3 CE credits. This program is being co-sponsored by The New York Freudian Society (NYFS). NYFS is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education programs for psychologists. The New York Freudian Society maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Baltimore Society of Psychoanalytic Studies is recognized by the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners as a sponsor of continuing education activities.

Presenter: Deborah Blessing, LiCSW
Friday, March 16, 2012 9:30am-12:30pm

Becoming an embodied self is a life-long task, the foundations of which are grounded first and foremost in our earliest experiences with caregivers and their handling of our bodies and states of mind. However, the work of integrating mind/body – of establishing an enduring sense of identity – entails fresh challenges at each successive developmental stage. Bodily changes and unique bodily experiences, and their meaning to us, as well as shifting developmental tasks, create upheavals with each new life phase. How do we remain fundamentally ourselves while also changing and adapting to new internal and external realities? We will explore these issues from an object relations perspective, holding in mind the mutually affecting body/mind, internal and external realities.

Registration: Free for WSPP members; $20 for non-members. (Non-members are invited to join WSPP for $60.00 and save on registration.) This workshop earns 3 Continuing Education credits (sponsored by the APA)- for an additional cost of $10.

Light refreshments will be offered.

Location: BCC BCC Services Center
4805 Edgemoor Lane
Bethesda, Maryland. See our website for directions.

Really Really

From one of the country’s most promising new voices comes this contemporary drama that pushes the edges and embraces the harsh reality of today’s youth.

At an elite university, when the party of the year results in the regret of a lifetime, one person will stop at nothing to salvage a future that is suddenly slipping away. In this quick-witted and gripping comic tragedy about “Generation Me,” it’s every man for himself.

Really Really contains nudity, strong language and explicit situations. For mature audiences only.

This is a world premiere by a talented young playwright. Peter Marks of the Washington Post writes:

“This may be the first time you’re hearing of Paul Downs Colaizzo, but on the evidence of his crackling new play, “Really Really,” the name bears committing to memory. A sexually charged comedy-drama about self-serving collegians of a coldly calculating variety, “Really Really” sucks you in with its brio and caustic wit and holds you with its teasingly clever double-edged plot.”

For this performance only all patrons will receive a $10.00 per ticket discount off the published ticket prices by using the code “sigARMY” when ordering tickets through Signature Theatre’s box office. All tickets must be purchased through Signature Theatre.
